EU Life-Long learning project: MAGICC – Modularising Multilingual and Multicultural Academic Communication Competence

Higher Education in Europe is becoming increasingly more international, creating multilingual and multicultural learning environments. This has a direct effect on students’ academic communication competences not only during but also after their studies, when they enter the working world. In light of this multilingual and multicultural development, nine European universities are developing scenarios in which students can work on these competences in the academic setting, preparing them for their future.

This EU life-long learning project, MAGICC (www.magicc.eu), started in 2011 and is rounding off this fall, has as principal objective to integrate multilingual and multicultural academic communication competences as graduate learning outcomes at the BA and MA level. In other words, it is developing various scenarios for BA and MA students where they can develop their academic and professional competences, intercultural skills and life-long learning strategies. The MAGICC project deals with transnationally shared learning outcomes, aligned activities, assessment forms and criteria and competence level benchmarks at European level, building on the well-established reference levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the INCA project for intercultural competences.

All the elements will be available in an academic e-Portfolio and accessible to all stakeholders. These complementary reference tools will be specific to the needs and aims of the higher education sector and the multilingual and multicultural academic communication core competences, including academic mother tongue competences.

This presentation will briefly show one of the scenarios, illustrate the transparency tools and demonstrate the e-portfolio. All of these elements will be made publically available to be used as a whole or each independently. The products of this project are of interest to students, teachers, faculties and employers.
